I posted this on my LJ and on a community on Live Journal and thought I'd share it with you guys
My good friend kowaiki translated this for me a month ago, and I thought, hey, it’s about time I post it for general information since some of you fans are dying for it right?
Veronica this is for you. In the Famitsu PS2 magazine I saw was an article about DMC4. There's a bit of new info, several new images and an interview with the producer (4 pages in total, another 2 pages on DMC3 special ed). There may be typos and grammar mistakes but I don't really care right now sorry. I hope you haven't read this translation off elsewhere first.
Famitsu: This time with Kobayashi you as the producer, Itsuno as the director and Kichikawa as the designer; what exactly prompted this lineup?
Kobayashi: Takeuchi is the producer of Biohazard 5 so that has nothing to do with me. Also, DMC4 is something that is going to be made with the next generation console, it's good timing so why not go for a change? That's how this came to be an entirely new system. However, including director Itsuno, basically the core members are made up of the ones from 3. And then there's me from 1. Designer Kichikawa is a totally new member. Until now he's been doing designs of fantasy characters such as those from "Breath of Fire"; now he's going to draw real men. The drawing is going to be different from the past, fans will probably be surprised. First it was a team of 3, while looking forward to Itsuno and Kichikawa joining the team, myself is also looking forward to working along with Itsuno for the first time. Of course, in regarding to Kichikawa's drawing of Dante (how he's going to look different) I thought, wouldn't that be interesting? Kichikawa has not illustrated real men in his job before, wouldn't he be really looking forward to it? That's how I think anyway.
Famitsu: Why is Kichikawa used this time?
Kobayashi: Well, we do want to change the image of 2 and 3 a little after all.
Famitsu: Is this change caused by the move to the next generation console?
Kobayashi: Rather than the next generation console, 4 is a bigger reason why we're making this change.
Famitsu: What is the concept this time? Is it totally different from 3?
Kobayashi: Due to the presence of the solid members from 3, I'm feeling quite relieved. 3's completion rate was good as it is. But we want to do something. I'm not say we won't change everything from 3, since the hardware is going to change too, we'll have to do something about that as well.
Famitsu: To what extend are you going to change things from 3?
Kobayashi: Due to the similarity of 1 and 3's background, we would like to change that part. Since Dante will be recognisible by his silhouette, we would like to bring out new things from other characters or the background. If it's still the same it won't be interesting, also fans will decrease right? Also, the game is too hard. 1's difficulty was high. Though it was a good game in the core, fans who started playing from 1 has grown 5 years older, they're probably a bit tired of violent games, we think there are many of those fans around. Of course we'll make it a good action game, but we'll avoid making it too hard. If there are many young users of Playstation 3, even if the game is hard it will probably draw them in. So we're thinking about balancing the difficulty in that persepective.
Famitsu: What about weapons and system?
Kobayashi: In regarding to weapons we haven't decided on anything yet. Though we think the two guns and long sword will remain. Things about the system is still a secret.
Famitsu: Dante's image has become adult-like, where about would you place his age this time within the DMC series?
Kobayashi: That's a tough question (laughs). The experimental Dante created for PS3, as well as the CG you're looking at now are all based on 3. On one hand, Kichikawa is designing 4's Dante at the moment. Therefore, technical experiment and design experiment is under process at the moment, honestly this is not 4's official Dante.
Famitsu: From now on will you stick to Kichikawa's illustrations?
Kobayashi: When we have decided on the illustration, the PS3 Dante will be born. He'll have a similar feel to this CG plus a bit more imagination added. It's still a bit early to show 4's Dante. Honestly, how old is Dante? We haven't decided on it yet. We're thinking about the story while designing. Actually we won't make him younger this time.
Famitsu: Younger than when would you not place him?
Kobayashi: 1, we won't place him younger than 1.
Famitsu: It felt like 3 was the limit to making Dante younger after all.
Kobayashi: So that's why we want to make it a story after 2, to say honestly. But if I lost in the discussion there's the possibily we'll make it take place before 1 (laughs). At the moment we're working towards a story occured after 1. Indeed 3 went back in time, but we don't think we'll do it again. There's no meaning to do so. We think the users want to see what happens in the future than in the past too. Looking at Kichikawa's drawings, what happened to Vergil? Well we're still thinking about that. Both illustration and new character images are both in experimental stage, please bear that in mind. Official details have not been decided yet, who is this? Wouldn't it be interesting to imagine it yourself?
::Some Facts about Kobayashi Hiroyuki::
