I've been lurking around a few other boards (I never post, other DMC fans seem to take the whole thing too seriously and are really snarky to each other), and I'm glad to see that the whole 'the sacrificed woman was Eva' seems to be dying. So I thought I would share my thoughts on the subject.
I never thought for one minute that the woman Sparda sacrificed was Eva. This makes no sense for a lot of reasons.
1. Dante and Vergil would then have to be approx. 2000 years old. I don't think so, not with any leap of the imagination can I make that jump. It's possible Capcom might suddenly shed new light on the whole thing and prove me wrong, but until then. No. I see nothing in either twins' behaviour that would suggest that kind of age.
2. The whole 'blood' issue. Arkham needed a set of Sparda's blood (maybe he only needed one really, but this way it sounded more cool, or maybe it was very fortunate that Sparda had twins as otherwise it wouldn't have worked!) and the blood of the sacrificed woman. If the sacrificed woman had been Eva, Arkham would have had everything he wanted in the twins' anyway and Lady would have been redundant.
I don't doubt that Arkham had the story of Sparda pretty correct, as he did get through Temen-ni-gru and opened the portal to hell, ect, ect, but I still am dubious about the whole 'Sparda sacrificed a woman' thing. Maybe it's just me, and I know that to an extent Sparda was quite capable, probably from a mental point of view, as if nothing else, he was still a demon, but sacrificing some innocent woman doesn't fit with how I see Sparda.
Looking at what Sparda did, and what he stood for, I have trouble seeing him cold bloodedly sacrificing someone, even for the greater good. Which is where, for me, DMC2 fits into the whole thing.
The inhabitants of Vi de Marli supposedly helped Sparda fight the demons as was said by Matier. It could be possible that one of the women was a voluntary sacrifice, or even that her blood was used, but not her life, and that history has distorted the story. Given Arkham's obvious perchant for the grim and evil, and his obssession with fear, it is quite possible that he would put his own interpretation and twist on the story, and we do only have the story from Arkham's point of view.
So, I'm not saying that this makes Lady and Lucia practically adopted sisters, but Lady's original family could have come from there, as I get the impression that Arkham's plan was a long time in the planning. I find it hard to believe that he 'coincidentally' married a descendant and it turns out, he has this plan and it's his own daughter that has the blood he wants. No, I believe it was quite planned, and therefore, not in itself a coincidence or suprising that Kalina Ann could have been decsended from the Clan at Vi de Marli.
