Katsuya Suou had been following a lead on his recent case since the the day's morning, but had not found a damn thing in all the time spent chasing the various clues around town. Now the sun was setting and Sergeant Suou shook his head out of desperation as he walked defeatedly away from the last place he had been led to, a small warehouse set between two taller buildings in a slightly run down part of town. Katsuya walked with his head down in deep thought when a small scruffling sound caught his attention. Shaking his thoughts away, the police officer inched towards the opening of the nearest alleyway, instinct telling him to keep his hand near his gun as he kept close to the wall.
Glancing around the corner what a normal person would consider a strange site met Katsuya's eyes. A grim expression overcame his face as the veteran User silently called his Persona to him without actually summoning it just yet. Gazing on intently, Katsuya judged the situation carefully.
At the far end of the alley was a group of demons the police officer recognized as Inugami. Katsuya knew that these dog headed demons with long bodies similar to Asian dragons were weak to Wind and quite possibly Shot, which meant his gun would easily dispatch them. But just in case he kept Helios, his beloved feline Persona, at the edge of his mind.
Another scuffling sound along with a small yelp of fear drew Katsuya's sight to a point beyond the swarming demons and he noticed for the first time the object that had the demons gathered around the area. The demons were getting ready to attack a helpless human girl. With a deep breath and gritting his teeth in anger at the idea of those demons hurting anyone, Katsuya rounded the corner with his gun aimed and shouted the first thing that came to his mind. "Freeze!"
As corny as it sounded, the command worked. Sort of. At the sound of the police officer's voice, five out of the seven demons turned around to focus on the new threat. Katsuya did not wait for them to size him up, he opened fire immediately.
The sound of two of their friends dying caused the two Inugamis still focused on the girl to hesitate. But with a preset command shouting in their minds, the demons quickly started back for the girl. Katsuya cursed as he saw the two Inugamis continue straight for the girl as the remaining three attacking him neared striking range.
Luckily for the officer, the first Inugami attacked with a fire breath and he was able to shoot the demon off-guard as the fire swirled around him without harm. Inside his mind Katsuya felt Helios smirk at the mere idea of fire hurting his User; Helios was the sun, all be damned if fire could ever hurt him or anything he protected. Katsuya dodged the other attacking demons as he leapt over the fallen one's disappearing corpse, running straight for the opposite end of the alley.
The officer's calculating mind immediately accessed the situation and knew that he would never make it in time, nor could he stop and hope to shoot fast enough to disable both demons before one tore out the girl's throat. Softly cursing, Katsuya used the only other option available to him. He called out his Persona.
Jessica had been happily, if a bit lost and confused, walking down the street searching for a place she probably should have gotten directions for when the surprise attack occurred. From out of nowhere three dog-like apparitions had begun chasing her. Scared beyond capable reasoning, she ran without realization and eventually found herself lured into the deadend alleyway when four more floating dog-things (Inugami, the back of her mind, the still rational part, screamed taking knowledge from her love of mythology and placing it into the situation) cut her off from in front. She gave up screaming for help some time ago and with nowhere else to go she had stood with her back facing the wall and stared horridly at the creatures closing in on her.
When the man with the gun had shown up, Jess did not question his firearm or skill with said weapon, but simply silently screamed with relief in her mind. However, as quickly as the relief came it just as rapidly faded when two of the beasts continued to focus on killing her. Irrational fear racked her body and left her defenseless as she sunk to the ground and huddled with her knees to her chest, a few tears making a trail down her cheeks. Offhandedly that rational part of her mind made the note that she had always thought that perhaps in a scary situation she might have been capable of handling it better. The rational part also noted that apparently she had not counted on demons actually existing, and consequently she had been utterly wrong. But right about that time, at the same moment the Inugamis were making a slashing attack and the gun-toting man was running towards her screaming out what she thought might be the name of something, an odd thing happened. She began to glow.
Katsuya immediately took in the green aura around the girl and knew he was witnessing a User summoning her Persona for the very first time. The girl was Awakening to her power and did not even know it. Stopping dead in his tracks, Katsuya pointed unnecessarily at the Inugamis in front of him as a similar green aura surrounded him. In less than a second the energy faded from view and left the image of a well dressed black cat hovering above Katsuya. Within the next second the cat had disappeared and reappeared directly in front of the girl with his arms outstretched towards one of the Inugami. Behind him, another cat appeared above the girl with a katana in hand.
As if on cue, the two felines attacked at once. Helios cast Zio at the same time the yet unnamed female cat performed a Heat Wave attack with her sword. The two attacks combined together in a fusion and utterly destroyed the two attacking demons in a grand light show caused by lightning and sword combining for one fatal attack.
Gaping with her mouth wide open, the girl sat in stunned silence staring at the two anthropomorphic felines as Katsuya raced up to her. Waving at Helios without looking, he unconsiously ordered his Persona to finish off the remaining two demons. In simple seconds the two were dispatched and the black cat had returned to his User's side.
Katsuya carefully helped the gawking girl to her feet and tried to gain her attention. When she finally looked at him, Katsuya made the mental note that she was not a native and automatically started speaking in English to, hopefully, save time if his guess was correct. Although it took some time, the girl eventually nodded in answer to his question of "Are you alright?" and Katsuya figured the slow response came from her dazed expression and not translating. She was more than likely a tourist from America or England, but quite frankly Katsuya could not tell the difference even when a person spoke.
Assured that the girl was okay, Katsuya turned his attention to his Persona and was just about to dismiss him when the sight of scythe wielding demons appeared in the middle of the alleyway. "Kuso!" Katsuya watched as several more unrecognizable demons jumped down from the rooftops and blocked off the exit completely then turned towards his new companion. He gently shook her by the shoulders to get her attention once more.
"Hey. Hey! Can you defend yourself?" At her hesitant nod he continued. "Good. You stay here and make sure your Persona stays summoned. She'll protect you even if you can't. Don't worry, I'm not going anywhere either, but I need to be focused on fighting. Okay?" Another hesitant nod and then Katsuya turned around with his gun back in hand. Helios took a similar stance next to his User and the four of them waited for the demons to make the first move.
Of course, all Jessica could think at this point was... what the hell is a Persona?
